Edward Rodgers Ssebuufu, better known as Eddie Mutwe, is a key figure responsible for the security of Ugandan presidential hopeful Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely recognized as Bobi Wine.
A Ugandan national, Eddie Mutwe stands out due to his muscular build, brown complexion, and distinct beard. His physical presence makes him easily identifiable within Bobi Wine’s team.
At 39 years old, his nickname “Mutwe” originated from video jockey VJ Mark, who, during film translations, often commented that certain characters resembled Ssebuufu, saying, “Look at the head, he looks like Eddie.” This eventually led to the alias “Eddie Mutwe.”
Early Life and Education
Eddie Mutwe was raised by his grandfather, Charles Senabulya, in Kisenyi, a Kampala suburb. Growing up in modest conditions, he became well-known in the area, particularly along Kafumbe Mukasa Road.
He recalls the struggles of life in Kisenyi, emphasizing the need for sharp survival skills. He is the only son of Jane Nantumbwe and has four sisters.
Meeting Bobi Wine
Eddie Mutwe met Bobi Wine around 25 years ago during their school years, forging a strong bond that has lasted ever since.
Reflecting on their youth, Mutwe recalls engaging in playful mischief at school events, which deepened their friendship.
Today, he heads security operations within Bobi Wine’s circle. Despite the significance of his role, Eddie Mutwe insists that he does not receive a salary for his work, viewing it as a personal duty rather than a job.
His skills in taekwondo and boxing, which he has practiced since childhood, contribute to his effectiveness. He also acknowledges Bobi Wine’s generosity in sponsoring his first international trip.
His mother, after unsuccessfully trying to persuade him to step away from security duties, ultimately entrusted his safety to divine protection.
Eddie Mutwe describes guarding Bobi Wine as his most challenging responsibility, given the inherent risks. He has faced accusations from authorities, including allegations of leading protests during political unrest.
One of the most difficult moments in his career was the 2018 Arua riots. “We nearly lost our lives in Arua. No one who was there will ever forget that day,” he recounted.
Family Life
Eddie Mutwe is married to a lawyer, though he keeps her identity private for security reasons. They have three children.
Other Ventures
Beyond his security duties, Eddie Mutwe owns a barbershop in the Park View building in central Kampala.
Controversies
Eddie Mutwe, along with Bobi Wine and others, was charged with treason following an incident during the Arua Municipality by-election, where stones were reportedly thrown at the presidential motorcade. He was detained alongside 48 others and appeared before the General Court Martial under Lt. Gen. Gutti, with his next hearing scheduled for January 19, 2021.
Authorities alleged that on January 3, in Makerere Kavule’s Kigundu zone, the group was found in possession of four bullets, which are restricted to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
