BUFFALO, NY — June 12, 2025 — Jamie Volkenner, a devoted Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse at Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) and Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, passed away on June 12, 2025, at the age of 38.
Jamie was a pillar of strength and compassion in Buffalo’s healthcare community, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. A graduate of D’Youville College, she earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing and became a respected member of the Professional Nurses Association of Western New York. Her colleagues remember her as a steady presence in times of crisis, a fierce advocate for patient care, and a cherished friend within the ICU.
Throughout her career, Jamie split her time between ECMC and Mercy Hospital, where she was known not only for her clinical expertise but for the kindness and humanity she brought to every patient interaction. In a 2021 interview, she spoke candidly about the challenges of frontline healthcare during the pandemic and the strain of the nursing shortage, highlighting her deep commitment to both her profession and the people she served.
Beyond the hospital walls, Jamie was a mentor to young nurses, a dedicated volunteer at health drives, and a passionate advocate for mental health resources for medical professionals. Her work, rooted in empathy, has left a lasting impact on the Buffalo medical community.
She is survived by her mother, Carol Volkenner of Amherst; her sister, Melissa Volkenner (Kevin Dunn) of Buffalo; her nephew, Liam; and her longtime partner, Rachel Jennings of Buffalo. She also leaves behind a close-knit circle of colleagues—nurses, physicians, and support staff—who will forever remember her laughter in the breakroom and her grace under pressure.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 15, 2025, at Asbury Hall in Buffalo. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ECMC Foundation’s Nursing Wellness Fund in Jamie’s honor.
Jamie Volkenner dedicated her life to caring for others. Her spirit, courage, and compassion will live on in the countless lives she touched.
