Margot Mott, Daughter of Riley Mott and Granddaughter of Hall of Fame Trainer Bill Mott, Passes Away at Age 2 After Battle with Brain Tumor.
MEMPHIS, TN – June 2024 — The Mott family is mourning the devastating loss of Margot Mott, the cherished 2-year-old daughter of Riley and Megan Mott and beloved granddaughter of Hall of Fame horse trainer Bill Mott. Margot passed away in June 2024 after bravely battling a malignant brain tumor.
Diagnosed in September 2023, Margot underwent extensive treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, where she received surgery and chemotherapy. Despite her young age, she faced her illness with remarkable courage, touching the hearts of medical staff and fellow families alike.
Margot is survived by her parents, Riley and Megan Mott, her infant brother William Mott, and her grandparents Bill and Tina Mott. Though her time was brief, she brought immeasurable joy and light to those who knew her.
Throughout Margot’s illness, Riley Mott balanced his growing training career with his devotion to his family, traveling frequently between Palm Meadows, Oaklawn Park, and Memphis to be by her side. “If that’s what I need to do to take care of my family and the horses, I’ll do it,” Riley said during Gulfstream’s Championship Meet. “I just want my family to be okay.”
In the midst of their grief, Riley and Megan found solace in the support of St. Jude’s community, where families facing similar battles became a source of strength. “Margot showed us what bravery really looks like,” Riley shared.
Margot’s passing is felt deeply not only by her family but by the broader horse racing community, which rallied around the Motts throughout her illness. Her story underscores the vital need for childhood cancer research and the compassionate, family-centered care provided by institutions like St. Jude.
A private funeral will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations in Margot’s name can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to support their ongoing mission in the fight against pediatric brain tumors.
Though her life was short, Margot Mott’s legacy of love and resilience will endure. She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.
