Travis Pride Obituary: Cause of Death Ponder, Texas — Byron Nelson High School mourn the sudden loss of coach Travis Pride, head football/athletic coordinator

The Byron Nelson High School community is mourning the sudden and tragic passing of Travis Pride, the school’s head football coach and campus athletic coordinator. Pride’s unexpected departure leaves behind a lasting legacy that extends well beyond the football field.

For nearly a decade, Coach Pride was more than a coach—he was a pillar of Byron Nelson’s athletic and academic programs, known for his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to his students. Principal Kara Lea Deardorff shared the heartbreaking news, noting that his influence touched the lives of “hundreds, if not thousands” of students.

“My heart breaks to share that we will no longer see the amazing impact one of our educators will have on students,” Principal Deardorff wrote. “Coach Pride was more than a coach—he was the architect of a supportive, engaging culture on our campus. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he mentored and inspired.”

A Leader Who Inspired Beyond the Game

Coach Pride’s impact went far beyond wins and losses. His calm, student-centered approach fostered a positive environment where success was measured not just in achievements on the field but in personal growth and development. His absence leaves an immense void at Byron Nelson High School.

Joel Johnson, executive director of athletics for Northwest ISD, described Coach Pride as a selfless leader who uplifted everyone around him.

“When I think of Travis Pride, I think of someone who supported all student activity—from athletics to fine arts,” Johnson said. “He was not driven by ego, and that made him a magnet for students. They wanted to be around him because they knew he genuinely cared about them.”

Providing Support for Students and the Community

The news of Coach Pride’s passing has profoundly affected students, faculty, and families across the district. In response, Byron Nelson High School is offering on-site counseling to help students cope with their emotions. Counselors will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday in the school’s front office, with additional sessions scheduled for the following week.

School leaders are encouraging open conversations and emotional support while also urging the community to respect the privacy of the Pride family as they navigate this tremendous loss.

A Legacy That Will Endure

Coach Travis Pride will be remembered not just as a coach and athletic director but as a trusted mentor, a loyal colleague, and a role model who made every student feel valued and supported. His influence will echo through generations of students who benefited from his leadership, compassion, and steadfast belief in their potential.

As the family finalizes memorial arrangements, the Byron Nelson community remains committed to honoring a man whose name became synonymous with integrity, excellence, and dedication.
