The communities of Smithfield and Clayton are grieving the passing of Marlon Lee, a respected figure in both athletics and public service. Lee, known for his leadership as the head coach of Clayton High School’s girls’ basketball team and his tenure on the Smithfield Town Council, recently passed away. His influence in sports and civic life has left a lasting imprint on Johnston County.
During his 17-year coaching career at Clayton High School, Lee guided the Lady Comets to numerous triumphs. Under his leadership, the team secured a sectional title, four regular-season conference championships, and two conference tournament victories. Beyond the accolades, Lee instilled discipline and teamwork, shaping his players into well-rounded individuals.
Outside the basketball court, Lee was a dedicated community leader. He served multiple terms on the Smithfield Town Council, working tirelessly to improve the lives of residents and address community needs. His commitment to civic engagement reflected his passion for public service.
Lee’s legacy also extends to his alma mater, Saint Augustine’s University (SAU), where he excelled as a basketball player. He played a crucial role in the 1996-97 SAU men’s basketball team that claimed the school’s first CIAA Men’s Title. His contributions were honored with induction into the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
His passing is a significant loss for both the athletic and civic communities in Johnston County. Those who knew him—colleagues, students, and residents—remember him as a dedicated coach, a committed public servant, and an inspiring mentor.
